A Half-Century of Fun and Flavor
Or VeShalom’s Annual Hanukkah Bazaar returns for its 50th anniversary with the beloved Sisterhood burekas, their legacy cookbook, and local artisans.
The inviting aromas of the sizzling hot line prepared by community members, the freshly baked pastries and the hum of holiday music all come together in one appetizing day.
The Sephardic synagogue Or VeShalom (OVS) is holding its half-century anniversary of the Hanukkah Bazaar and Food Festival on Nov. 15, and it’s going to be exciting as it will be accompanied by chatter and laughter intertwined with kids’ activities like facepainting, a bouncy house, and games. The endeavor that takes months of planning by community partners and the 150 Sisterhood members who breathe life into this long-standing function.
Over the past 50 years, women of OVS Sisterhood have taken pride in their Tuesday burekas bake and sale as part of Or VeShalom’s annual fundraiser. What started with a White Elephant sale and dinner slowly morphed into a refined vendor-equipped ritzy bazaar that draws in people from all ends of the community.
President of the Sisterhood, Kathie Alhadeff, told the AJT that the bazaar is going to be unusually exciting in that, “the first 50 families or individuals who walk through the door to attend the event will receive a gift as part of the anniversary celebration.”
Alhadeff says that this year’s raffle baskets are exceptionally unique — but you’ll have to be there to enter to win!
Join the congregation for an immersive experience where you will stroll through a bustling social hall filled with more 30 vendors selling everything from handmade candles, paintings, an assortment of ornate Judaica pieces, to books and jewelry. Enjoy lunch and buy food to take home. Funds raised at the bazaar support a variety of programs and special projects at OVS.
The event is from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 15. Admission is $5 per person or $20 maximum per family. For more information, please visit https://www.orveshalom.org/bazaar.
