Gorst, Gold, Fried Lose on Consecutive Days
It was a tough week on the baseball mound for the two Jewish Atlantans and the Braves' top Jewish pitcher.
Atlanta Braves left-handed pitcher Max Fried took the mound Friday, May 11, for the first time since being sent back to AAA Gwinnett on May 5, and he took the loss in the Stripers’ 10-3 defeat at home against Norfolk.
Fried wasn’t bad, giving up three runs on seven hits and three walks in four innings while striking out five. The Stripers trailed only 3-0 when he left the game, but any hope for a comeback faded after reliever Rex Brothers gave up four runs in the seventh inning. David Peterson gave up three more in the top of the ninth.
It was the first time in four minor-league starts this season that Fried gave up more than two runs.
Colorado Rockies minor-leaguer Brandon Gold, a pitching product of the Davis Academy, Johns Creek High and Georgia Tech, had another rough start Thursday, May 10, for High-A Lancaster of the California League.
Gold was the losing pitcher as the JetHawks fell at home to Inland Empire, 4-2. Gold was charged with all four runs in four-plus innings while giving up seven hits and one walk and striking out two. His record for the season is 3-2 with a 5.89 ERA.
Gold’s high school and college teammate, Matthew Gorst, had a streak of six consecutive pitching appearances in the High-A Carolina League without allowing a run come to an end Wednesday, May 9, in Salem’s 10-inning home loss to Winston-Salem.
After pitching a scoreless ninth inning, Gorst surrendered a three-run home run to Blake Rutherford in the top of the 10th. Because a new minor-league rule puts a runner on second to start the 10th inning, only two of the three runs were earned.
The two-inning appearance raised the Red Sox farmhand’s ERA to a still-excellent 2.08 over 17 1/3 innings pitched this season, all in relief.
