Jews Making News: Bloomberg, Dennings
Bloomberg Being Honored for Commitment to Jewish Community
Michael Bloomberg, businessman, politician, philanthropist, and current Mayor of New York, will be the first recipient of the “Jewish Nobel Prize,” an award being offered by the Genesis Philanthropy Group.
Next May, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will present Bloomberg with $1 million, just part of the prize meant to recognize “exceptional human beings who, through their outstanding achievement, come to represent a fundamental value of the Jewish people — a commitment to the betterment of mankind.”
Bloomberg, a billionaire, said he will donate the money to a charity. Through Bloomberg Philanthropies, the mayor works to advance five areas he thinks important to our culture: the arts, education, the environment, government innovation and public health.
Bloomberg, who often speaks on Jewish causes and supports the state of Israel, has been a role model for many Jews in politics and business.
