Health and Wellness Free Event Planned

Learn the Latest on Cerebral Palsy

A town-hall discussion June 3 will update parents on developments in the management and treatment of CP.

Blazing New Trails is an initiative of Reaching for the Stars.

Reaching for the Stars is organizing a town-hall meeting Saturday, June 3, to spread information about the latest advances in caring for children with cerebral palsy.

The free event is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Office Park at 1680 Tullie Circle, between Brookhaven and Toco Hills off North Druid Hills Road, in Building 1680, Classroom 5.

The scheduled speakers include Joshua Vova, a pediatric physiatrist and medical director of CHOA rehabilitation services; Erin Eggebrecht, a physical therapist with the Children’s Center for Advanced Technology and Robotic Rehabilitation; Ayanna Howard, a Georgia Tech professor and the chief technology officer of Zyrobotics; and Lisa Wyatt and Wendy Sullivan, parents of children with CP.

The town hall is part of the Reaching for the Stars foundation’s Blazing New Trails initiative to bring information and support to families dealing with the disease. Blazing New Trails also involves nonprofit BlazeSports America and has sponsorship by Ipsen Biopharmaceuticals.

The program aims to educate patients and their families about overall management, physical and occupational therapies, and adaptive technologies that could help children living with CP.

Cerebral palsy is the most common cause of motor disability in children, affecting an average of 1 in 323 children in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“We know first-hand the difficulties patients and families affected by cerebral palsy go through, and having the ability to learn from many resources in one place, while also connecting with others in the community who are going through the same journey, is empowering.” said Cynthia Frisina, the founder of Reaching for the Stars and executive director of BlazeSports America. She has a son with CP.
