A Chanukah Message From Bonnie and Chuck Berk

For our annual Chanukah issue, we asked members of our community to share why they think it is so important for our Jewish community to, "Shine Our Light Bold and Bright."

The Maccabees fought for their religious freedom and won a stunning victory — victory of the few over the many, the weak over the strong, believing that a few dedicated people can change the world. We always tried to teach our kids to be persistent. If you believe in something, fight to achieve it.

Chanukah prompts us to reflect on our people’s quest over thousands of years for freedom and human dignity and it reminds us of our values and what our responsibilities are to our friends, family, and fellow men. This is a perfect time for us to step back, especially in these contentious political times, and think about re-dedicating ourselves to higher aspirations.

As Jews, we have an obligation to be a light unto the world by stressing the teachings, or “light,” of the Torah and we have a duty to bring light to others.

Chuck Berk is local co-chair of the Republican Jewish Coalition with his wife, Bonnie.
