During this hot rainy summer (Atlanta is always hot and rainy in the summer – right?) the Jewish Earth Alliance scheduled a National Pre-Tisha B’Av Virtual Lobby Day on Tuesday, July 21. More than 300 volunteers from 28 states held 53 remote lobbying events with their senators. Georgia participants met with legislative assistants from Sen. Raphael Warnock’s office in the morning and from Sen. Jon Ossoff’s office in the afternoon.

The Jewish Earth Alliance (JEA) is an all-volunteer grassroots network of 60 organizations across the country, consisting of people who deeply believe that protecting the Earth is integral to Jewish identity, faith, and practice. The JEA is mobilizing Jews to stand up and raise a loud, collective voice for policies that they feel reflect their values. The JEA believes that climate change is a moral challenge that demands an urgent response.

Bill Witherspoon, chair of the Georgia Lobby Day Team, explains, “We brought up three talking points with the senators’ staffs; including a bipartisan bill to fund weather research and forecasting. Clean air and water are crucial to America’s safety and health. In addition, we presented personal perspectives of climate change with regards to Tybee Island, right outside of Savannah. Everyone agreed that it is a beautiful place to visit and relax. The priority is to protect the beach when severe weather can cause damage.”

Simone Wilker, advocacy chair for Hadassah Greater Atlanta, states, “Hadassah believes in environmental preservation, drawing from Judaism’s traditional view of humans as stewards of the Earth. Having planted hundreds of thousands of trees in Israel, Hadassah knows the importance of healing the environment, as it supports the Jewish organizations that are guarding the planet, as rooted in the concept of Shomrei Adamah.”

The Jewish Earth Alliance and Hadassah Greater Atlanta are committed to empowering their members and supporters to take action in a variety of ways. These two organizations are a dynamic force for change. For more information, go to: www.hadassah.org and www.jewishearthalliance.org.
