Michal Bonell’s Passover Message for 2026
For our Passover holiday issue, we invited members of our staff and community to share their responses.
Being a good Jew is about living with purpose, responsibility, and care for others. At its core, it means striving to be a good human being. Jewish tradition places strong emphasis on ethical behavior — treating people with respect, being honest in daily life, showing compassion to those who are struggling, and working toward a more just society. These values encourage individuals to think beyond themselves and contribute positively to the communities around them.
One important way this is expressed is through mitzvahs. In a broader sense, mitzvahs can be understood as meaningful actions that reflect Jewish values. They include acts such as giving charity, helping those in need, visiting the sick, welcoming guests, and standing up for fairness and dignity. These actions turn values into practice. A good Jew tries to bring kindness and responsibility into everyday situations, understanding that small actions can make a real difference.
Supporting Israel is a fundamental way to support Judaism. Israel represents an important center of Jewish life, language, and culture. Jews globally feel an emotional attachment to Israel and consider it an ancestral homeland. Support can take many forms: learning and teaching others about its history, supporting its communities, and praying for a peaceful future where Israel is recognized and accepted by all.
Ultimately, being a good Jew means carrying forward traditions of responsibility, compassion, and community. By focusing on ethical living, practicing mitzvahs through everyday good deeds, and maintaining a connection to the Jewish people and Israel, a person helps strengthen both their own character and the wider world.
