Julius Berman, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on June 28, 2026, in Atlanta, Ga., at the age of 95. He was born on Nov. 18, 1930, in Savannah, Ga., and spent his formative years in McRae, Ga., before going on to live a life defined by service, dedication, and deep family devotion.

Julius received his early education in McRae, then at Georgia Military Academy and finally at the University of Georgia. During this time, he developed the discipline and character that would guide him throughout his life.

Prior to his graduation from UGA, he met and soon thereafter married the love of his life, Joanne Shapiro. In 1953, he entered the United States Army serving in Takeyama, Japan. Julius served with honor and was honorably discharged in 1955, attaining the distinguished rank of Second Lieutenant.

Following his military service, Julius and Joanne returned to Savannah, where he established himself as a business owner. His entrepreneurial spirit and strong work ethic later led him to Augusta, Ga., where he joined the family business, Shapiro Packing Co. He contributed meaningfully to the company’s growth and success until its sale, which ushered in a well-earned retirement in Atlanta, the city he called home for the remainder of his life.

Julius was preceded in death by his loving parents, Harry and Sonia Berman, and his beloved wife, Joanne, who passed away on June 24, 2011. Julius and Joanne’s partnership was a cornerstone of the family, and her memory remained with him always.

Julius is survived by his three children: his daughter, Toni Berman Miller of Houston, Texas, and her husband, Gary Miller; his son, Jeffrey N. Berman of Atlanta, and his wife, Kimberly Richardson Berman; and his daughter, Sonia Berman. Julius was the proud grandfather of six grandchildren: Scott Miller (Sarah), Allison Leibman (Neville), Kathleen Berman (Sara), Matthew Berman (Annalise Peters), Brooke Rappaport, and Craig Rappaport; and the cherished great-grandfather of seven great-grandchildren: Owen, Jake and Hunter Miller; Kate, Henry and James Leibman; and Bennett Berman. Julius was also lovingly cared for in his final years by his devoted caregiver, Alethia Belle, whose compassion and dedication brought him comfort and joy.

A private burial will be held at Arlington Memorial Park. For those who wish to honor the memory of Julius, the family requests donations to Jewish HomeLife. Arrangements by Dressler’s Jewish Funeral Care 770-451-4999
