Obituary: Lewis Craine

Lewis Craine, architect and builder, died on April 18, 2026, at the age of 91. Born in Detroit in 1935 to his cherished parents Max and Mollie, he attended Cass Tech High School where he graduated as the valedictorian in 1953. He went on to study architecture at the University of Michigan, remaining a devoted UM fan his entire life. In 1969, he married his beloved wife, Sandra, and they spent the next 57 years raising their children, doting on their grandchildren (who called him Papa), rooting for UM, listening to jazz, and traveling the world.

He was predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Teri Craine; and his brother, Clifford Craine (Susan Linn). He is survived by his wife, Sandra; daughter, Mara Van de Grift (Kevin), son, Ari Craine (Jodi); grandchildren, Zoe Van de Grift, Joeli Van de Grift, Lola Craine, and Miles Craine; and sibling, Toni Jacob. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. The funeral service was held April 21, 2026, at 11 a.m. at Arlington Memorial Park.
