March 28 is the deadline for applicants for the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust’s Distinguished Education of 2017, an award that will be presented at the Days of Remembrance ceremony April 28 at the Georgia Capitol.

The award goes to a full-time educator in fifth to 12th grade who has “demonstrated excellence in the development and presentation of lessons or activities focused on the Holocaust, human rights, civil rights or character development” and has motivated students to be active community members.

The award includes a plaque and a $500 stipend for educational materials.

Teachers in public and private schools are eligible. People who won the award before 2014 may apply again. In fact, 2016 honoree Brendan Murphy of the Marist School is a two-time winner.

Visit holocaust.georgia.gov/distinguished-educator-2017 for the application form and details on required supporting materials.
