Give the gift of reading to the children in our community! Each year, the Book Festival of the MJCCA coordinates Project GIVE, a community action project. This year, Book Festival guests, as well as visitors to the MJCCA, have donated more than 1,000 new and gently used children’s books through Project GIVE to the Atlanta Jewish Coalition to Literacy(AJCL- sponsored by the National Council of Jewish Women, Atlanta Section.) Donation bins are located at the MJCCA’s Front Desk. Books will be collected through November 30, 2014. For more information, contact projectgive@atlantajcc.org or 678.812.3978.

The Atlanta Jewish Coalition for Literacy (AJCL)

The AJCL strives to promote literacy – one child at a time. The AJCL trains and recruits volunteer reading tutors who work with students K-3rd grades in metro Atlanta Title 1 elementary schools. The AJCL mission: To enhance the reading skills, attitudes, and life prospects of children who need assistance.

“We are so appreciative to the members of the community who have participated in this special community action project,” Project Give Co-Chair Ellen Chalef said. “The books that are donated by the community are taken to schools where volunteer tutors and books are most needed.”

“Tutors choose the books to read with their children, and once the child has mastered a book, the book is gifted to the student,” said Project Give Co-Chair Kim Urbach.

“These tutors, as well as the books, are making such a difference in the lives of these students,” added Project Give Co-Chair Susie Sommer. “Not only are they receiving the present of a book, but they are gaining the gift of being able to read it, independently.”
