Leonard Nimoy, the actor best known for playing Spock on “Star Trek,” died Friday, according to his family. The iconic actor was 83.

Nimoy was famously inspired by a Jewish ritual when he came up with the Vulcan greeting “Live Long and Prosper.” For nearly 50 years he portrayed Spock in Television and Film. Most recently in 2013’s Star Trek reboot.

A message posted to Nimoy’s Twitter account, @TheRealNimoy Friday afternoon read:

Nimoy’s wife, Susan Bay Nimoy, confirmed his death, and said the cause was end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He had announced this year that he had the disease and attributed it to years of smoking, a habit he gave up thirty years prior. He was hospitalized earlier in the week.
