Obituary: Dr. Allen J. Shaw

Dr. Allen J. Shaw, age 94, passed away in West Palm Beach on Monday morning, April 20, 2026.

Born in New York and raised in Miami Beach, Dr. Shaw moved to Atlanta to attend Emory University, where he graduated from dental school in 1959. For over 50 years, his dental practice on Lavista Road was a cornerstone of the neighborhood. In 2013, he and his wife retired to Miami Beach, and in 2020 they moved to West Palm Beach.

Dr. Shaw took care of his body by being an avid tennis player, and he took care of his soul by being a regular attendee of Torah classes. He was a strong supporter of Israel (with two dozen descendants living there) and a dedicated advocate for Jewish education, serving on the boards of numerous local institutions. In 2014, he and his wife were honored for their decades of communal support in the Toco Hills community, and in 2018 he, alongside his wife, was recognized as a “Founding Funder” of the Atlanta Scholars Kollel.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 40 years, Shelley Shaw; “the twins,” Sheila (Jutan) and Joseph Shaw, their older brother, Billy Shaw, and children, Dawn (Newman), and Tsaffie (Kreitenberg); and more than 40 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Donations in his memory may be made to Congregation Beth Jacob of Atlanta, Congregation Ohr HaTorah of Atlanta, the Atlanta Scholars Kollel, Atlanta Jewish Academy, Chabad Beth Tefillah, and Hineni of Toco Hills.
