Obituary: Gloria Greenberg Cohen

Gloria Greenberg Cohen, of Columbus and Atlanta, Ga., passed away peacefully on Sept. 10, shortly after her 86th birthday.

Gloria was born in Atlanta to Sonny and Pauline Greenberg on Sept. 8, 1940. She went to Grady High School, the University of Georgia and graduated from Columbus State University with a master’s in early childhood education. She and Dr. Marvyn Cohen were happily married for over 55 years, living in Columbus and on Lake Harding. She was a life-long teacher, starting with pre-school and kindergarten, and ending up teaching early childhood education at Columbus State University.

She was a leader at Temple Israel, Shearith Israel Synagogue, Jewish Ladies Aid Society, and the Jewish Federation of Columbus. She was the long-time chair of the successful Deli Day annual fundraiser, raising money for the Columbus community. She loved and prioritized her family, was known for her generosity and friendliness, and her passions included gardening, entertaining, baking, mahjong, and travel. She loved “lake living” where she often hosted her family and friends.

Gloria was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Marvyn. Gloria is survived by her three children, Mauri Artz of Atlanta, Sonny Cohen (and wife, Kirstie) of Atlanta, and Jason Cohen of New York City. She is also survived by her six grandchildren, Max Artz (and wife, Liv) of Park City, Utah, Carson Artz (and wife, Becca) of Park City, Cassidy Artz of Denver, Colo., Annie McGinty (and husband, Jack) of Denver, Taylor Cohen of Dallas, Texas, and Michael Cohen of Atlanta. She is also survived by her two great-grandsons, August Artz and Easton Artz of Park City.

Graveside services were held for family and close friends at Greenwood Cemetery, in Atlanta, Georgia, at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 15. A Celebration of Life will be held at Temple Israel in Columbus at a future date.
