Ira Hefter of Atlanta and Cape Neddick, Maine, died peacefully Sept. 12, 2020, in his home in Maine. He was 78 years old.

Ira was born March 23, 1942, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Ida and Sol Hefter. He graduated with a degree in accounting from New York University. Ira started his career at the accounting firm of Touche Ross, ultimately becoming a partner in the tax practice. In 1983, he was appointed the managing partner of the Atlanta office of Touche Ross. While in Atlanta, he was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and was part of the delegation to represent Atlanta on a mission to Russia. He was chairman of the Peach Bowl in 1986. In 1991, he went back to New York as the national director of tax. He retired from Deloitte in 1993, after which he focused on other business ventures.

He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 57 years Barbara; son and daughter-in-law Michael and Ellen Hefter of Purchase, N.Y.; and daughter and son-in-law Jennifer and Greg Fink of Marietta, Ga. Ira is also survived by his six grandchildren Steven, Robert, Spencer, Jimmy, Alexandra and Peter; brother Sheldon; and sister Francine.

A private funeral was held Sept. 15. In light of COVID-19, the family will schedule a memorial service in the future to celebrate Ira’s life.
