On Sunday, Feb. 1, the lobby of Berman Commons in Dunwoody was transformed into a scene of elegance and celebration as residents, families, volunteers, and staff gathered for the first annual Ms. Berman Commons Seniors Pageant. The afternoon shimmered with gowns, smiles, and heartfelt applause — an unforgettable tribute to the women who call the senior living community home.

Berman Commons is part of Jewish HomeLife, a nonprofit network of seven at-home care services and residential communities supporting every stage of the aging journey. That mission was on full display as 15 residents proudly took part in the pageant, each stepping into the spotlight with confidence and joy.

The excitement began well before the runway. A professional hair stylist and makeup artist worked one-on-one with each contestant, adding polish and sparkle while laughter and anticipation filled the air. Berman Commons’ dedicated staff planned every detail and decorated the lobby to create a magical venue worthy of the occasion — complete with a runway that set the stage for a truly memorable afternoon.

Adding to the sense of community, young men from The Epstein School and proud family members escorted each participant down the runway. Their presence brought intergenerational warmth and reverence to the event, as the volunteers proudly walked arm-in-arm with the contestants, celebrating both beauty and life experience.

Families packed the event hall, cheering and waving as their loved ones made their entrance. Among them was a particularly moving sight: one family arrived with four generations in attendance to support their matriarch, a moment that perfectly captured the spirit of the day — connection, continuity, and celebration across time.

The contestants dazzled in evening gowns, each woman radiating her own style and personality. As applause filled the room, it was clear that every participant was a winner simply by being there. When the time came to announce the pageant’s honoree, Willie Richardson accepted her award with grace, waving elegantly to the crowd as cheers rang out. Her smile reflected the pride and joy shared by all.

“This event wasn’t just about the runway — it was about the community that stood behind it. Watching families cheer, grandchildren wave, and volunteers walk arm-in-arm with our residents reminded us that aging is something to be honored and celebrated together,” said Janece Jenkins, Berman Commons activity director.

The Ms. Berman Commons event was a celebration of dignity, resilience, and the enduring joy of community. It offered residents a chance to be seen, celebrated, and cherished — surrounded by family, friends, volunteers, and staff who made the day shine.

“What made this afternoon so special was seeing our residents light up in a new way. Some of these ladies haven’t worn a formal gown in years, and the moment they looked in the mirror and saw themselves all dressed up, you could feel their confidence return. That transformation is why we do what we do,” said Priscilla Royal, Berman Commons activities coordinator.
