To the Editor,

I am writing with regard to the recent death of Mollie Aczel of Blessed Memory. Mollie was the founding head of The Davis Academy and lead the school for eight years until her retirement (from 1991-1999). Her leadership and educational expertise, no doubt, helped establish the thriving institution that The Davis Academy has become today. It was her dedication, passion, and tireless commitment to fostering Jewish learning in the first eight years that shaped The Davis Academy into the school with the academic vigor and Jewish values that it is known for.

Mollie believed strongly in the importance of a strong secular Jewish education. Her legacy is reflected in the countless students and teachers whose lives have been enriched by her vigor and commitment. I was fortunate to be the “head” of the search committee that found Mollie and I knew from the moment that my husband and I picked her up at the airport that she was the right person for the job. It was my pleasure as a school psychologist to help her develop the Admission Program which was designed after a model that had been utilized at another local private school.

The Atlanta Jewish community has lost another jewel in our lives and I can proudly say that Mollie was one of the best educators that I have worked for in my 46 years as a school psychologist. I think that many parents and teachers would agree.

Susan Feinberg, Atlanta, Ga.
