To the Editor,

As an 85-year-old Holocaust survivor, Atlanta resident, and educator with the Breman Holocaust Museum, I felt compelled to respond to your April 30 article, “Incident at Decatur High Embroils Jewish Community.”

While I understand the importance of reporting troubling incidents, I was deeply disappointed that the article seemed to present Decatur High School students largely in a negative light without acknowledging the many positive experiences that also exist within that community.

In January 2023, I had the privilege of visiting Decatur High School to speak with the Drama Club about my personal experiences surviving the Holocaust. I was profoundly moved by the students’ respect, compassion, and sincere desire to learn. Following my talk, I attended their moving performance of “Letters from Sala,” a production that demonstrated deep thoughtfulness and sensitivity to Jewish history.

One especially touching moment came when a student performer, dressed in a Nazi costume for his role, was hesitant to appear before me because he worried it might cause offense. His concern reflected not hatred, but empathy and humanity.

After witnessing the students’ dedication, I asked the head of the Drama Club whether they would consider performing the show as a fundraiser for Hemshech, an Atlanta-based organization supporting Holocaust survivors. They enthusiastically agreed. Their performance raised $1,000 for this important cause.

These young people showed me something powerful: this generation can choose education, compassion, and action over hate.

As someone who has dedicated much of my life to teaching younger generations about the dangers of antisemitism and intolerance, I believe it is equally important to recognize and celebrate examples of courage, allyship, and understanding when they occur.

Decatur High School’s students deserve to be seen not only through moments of controversy, but also through the remarkable ways they have supported the Jewish community and stood against hate.

I hope future coverage will strive for a fuller and more balanced picture — one that includes both challenges and the inspiring efforts of students who are working to make a difference.

Sincerely,

Hershel Greenblat, Holocaust survivor, educator, and speaker, Atlanta, Ga.
