Congregation Ner Tamid, a URJ Reform congregation located in Marietta, will celebrate a major milestone this year with its 10th Annual Marietta Square Menorah Lighting. The community-wide event will take place at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 20, bringing together families from Cobb County and beyond for an evening of light, joy, and tradition.
Attendees will enjoy live music, traditional holiday treats including latkes and sufganiyot, and several opportunities for audience participation — especially for children. Young attendees, regardless of religious background, are invited each year to help “light the candles” using brightly decorated flashlights.
“Last year someone came to us and said they had lit a candle back in 2018,” said Matt Berenson, president of Congregation Ner Tamid. “They mentioned they were raised Catholic, but it was a cool Jewish experience they’ve never forgotten. It is an honor and a privilege to share our culture and celebrations with the public for all to enjoy.”
This year’s celebration will also include free gift card raffles and a special $25-per-ticket drawing for a three-day weekend getaway in Blue Ridge, Ga.
In recognition of the event’s 10th anniversary, several local dignitaries will be in attendance, including Marietta Mayor Steve Tumlin, Cobb County Chairwoman Lisa Cupid, additional Cobb County commissioners, and Marietta Councilman Joseph Goldstein.
Rabbi Joseph Prass — who is also marking his 10th year on the pulpit at Congregation Ner Tamid — will share the story of Chanukah and the meaning behind the lighting of candles for eight nights.
The milestone coincides with another special occasion for the congregation itself: Congregation Ner Tamid is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. The synagogue serves Jewish and interfaith families throughout Cobb County as well as in Paulding, Cherokee, and Bartow counties.
